SLG is committed to providing pro-bono and low-bono legal services, so that everyone has the opportunity to receive quality counsel, regardless of ability to pay. Each of our attorneys serves as a volunteer director on the board of one or more nonprofit organizations dedicated to charitable purposes about which they are passionate. Every year, we donate at least 5% of our billed hours through pro-bono legal services on behalf of our clients. chris cohen

Chris is passionate about helping forward-thinking leaders and activists use business, cooperation and creative projects to drive positive social and environmental change. Chris also provides estate planning services for families and individuals, with a particular emphasis on succession planning for US Forest Service Recreation Residence cabins.

Prior to practicing law, Chris was a government relations professional for Scripps Institution of Oceanography for nearly 10 years, where he advocated for earth and ocean science programs and acquired an in-depth knowledge of environmental science and policy issues.

Chris volunteers as Chair of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors’ Ojai Valley Municipal Advisory Council. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for Regenerative Agriculture and on the Legal Advisory Committee for the Ojai Valley Defense Fund.

ANASTASIA MAIER

Anastasia focuses on supporting the social reproduction of movements through relational legal work. Grounded in the work of radical thought leaders, earth-based practices and her mentors, she is exploring whether (and how) the legal system may be used in a supportive capacity for both humans and ecology. Within this work, she has a particular interest in reimagining modern property law in practice and not just theory. Anastasia is admitted to practice in both California and Washington and a certified facilitator of the Lumos Transforms' Resilience Toolkit.

 
 

Laura Hunter

Laura’s philosophy in practicing law is to use her decades of experience as a lawyer and c-level executive to assist her clients in focusing on their unmet business needs by “doing good” while “doing well”. Her goal in representing companies and providing legal services is to propel growth, create lasting solutions, and control legal spend while always placing business objectives and societal issues first. Laura would describe herself as not only a team player, but as a calm force who can lead and manage by example, achieve buy-in and advance the business objectives of any organization. Because Laura has represented companies from inception to maturity, from private to public, and through an ultimate liquidity event in M&A transactions, she offers her clients he full complement of legal expertise that they might need.

Laura has decades of expertise in all types of transactional corporate work, including entity formation, corporate financings (both public and private), contract drafting, negotiation and review (representing both private and public companies), as well as investors in such companies. Laura has a particular expertise in the health care industry, having represented medical device, HCIT, clinical laboratory, specialty pharmaceutical, home and hospice care, biotechnology and other companies, as well as investors in those companies. She is well-versed in all regulatory aspects of the companies in this subset of the healthcare industry.

Laura previously enjoyed a career in a corporate securities for several years. She has raised billions of dollars in capital, participated in 75+ public offerings and dozens of M&A transactions, as well as countless private company financing transactions.

Laura has also held positions as in-house General Counsel and as Chief Legal Officer in both public and private companies for over a decade. Laura’s experience also includes the roles of Chief Compliance Officer and the head of Government and Regulatory Affairs in several companies. Due to her extensive compliance experience (and knowledge of the highly regulated healthcare industry), she can also seamlessly move within other companies in highly regulated industries. In addition, she is well versed in the corporate governance and compliance responsibilities of both public and private companies. She has written legislation, testified before Congress in several states and successfully passed (or blocked) legislation in multiple states.

Laura currently works as an independent legal and strategic business advisor to a number of companies and executives and is the outside general counsel/chief legal officer for several. She also advises companies on HR, compliance, supply chain, R&D and other matters.

Laura has been on the Board of Directors or Advisory Board of several profit and non-profit companies, and currently volunteers for several organizations. She is currently on the board of K[Her]ut, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that empowers survivors of sex trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse, imprisonment, and young women aging out of foster care in a safe and supportive environment.


 
 

Becki Ueno

Becki provides creative legal counsel rooted in respect and compassion towards her clients, communities and her own team. For over 20 years, she has worked with nonprofits, social enterprises, environmental, and social justice organizations. Before practicing law, Becki wore many hats in the nonprofit sector: as a fundraiser, organizer, director, and volunteer. With the Public Interest Network, she organized national, state and local environmental and social justice campaigns on college campuses. She also served as the director of the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, the largest public interest environmental law conference in the world. 

Becki currently serves on the board of several nonprofit organizations, including the UCLA NICU Family Advisory Board, Humanitarian, and Snow Lovers. Becki is also frequently invited as a guest speaker at colleges, on podcasts, and other conferences and events. She has served as a guest lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Business and for the American Bar Association, and spoken at numerous conferences and events, including the 2019 Annual B-Corp Champions Retreat.
